I am Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex, studying the first galaxies in the Universe and sharing the wonders of astronomy with public audiences.

Full biography

I am a Professor of Astronomy and Public Understanding of Science at the University of Sussex, near Brighton. I earned my Master’s degree in Physics from Durham University, followed by a PhD from the University of Cambridge. After completing my doctoral studies, I held a research fellowship at the University of Oxford before joining the faculty at Sussex in 2013.

My research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies, with a particular emphasis on the earliest stages of the Universe. To explore these cosmic beginnings, I combine observational data from space telescopes such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope with state-of-the-art supercomputer simulations.

Beyond my research, I am passionate about science communication and public engagement. I have led three exhibits at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and regularly deliver public talks aimed at making science accessible, engaging, and inspiring for a wide audience.
