Amateur Contributions to Professional Research
In recent years amateurs have been supporting research proactively by making hundreds of discoveries of planetary nebulae, supernova remnants and other cosmic objects. Additionally amateurs have been supporting professionals re-actively by responding to requests from professional astronomers for assistance. Peter will explain how amateurs are making discoveries, and talk through a typical case study. He will also explain why professionals are seeking amateur help, and give some recent examples where amateurs have been able to do what professionals were unable to do."
Decoding Our Cosmic Origins
Over the past 100 years unimaginable discoveries have transformed our understanding of cosmology. These have led to new models of theoretical physics in an attempt to explain these discoveries. It is said that no physicists in the world are currently satisfied with our explanations of cosmology. This talk looks at how and why theoretical physics has evolved over the past century; the issues that still need to be resolved; and the implications regarding both the origin and future of the universe.
